Cleaner Reaction Solvent In The Synthesis Of Pimozide And Loperamide
The Problem
Pimozide and loperamide chlorohydrate are antipsychotic and antidiarrheal drugs respectively. In their synthesis methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) is used, which is a solvent classified as VOC, highly flammable, harmful by inhalation, and irritating to eyes and to respiratory system, and therefore it was desirable to replace MIBK by a solvent with benign toxicological and environmental properties.
The Solution
Inkemia has replaced MIBK by improved alternatives with benign toxicological and environmental profiles, allowing the production of pimozide and loperamide under safe conditions leading to an economically viable process.
